People ask me all the time what software I play on and what I produce with. Most “best DJ software” lists try to cover everything. This one is different. It is the gear I actually use, after years of club sets and ten years of recording my Electro Club podcast, from 2010 to 2020.
The short answer
- DJ software: Traktor Pro is my main software. I have also played out on rekordbox.
- DJ hardware: a Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol controller.
- Production: Logic Pro, Native Instruments plugins, VPS Avenger 2 and Nexus 5.
- For beginners: I recommend Traktor.
Traktor Pro: my main DJ software
Traktor Pro is made by Native Instruments and runs on Windows and Mac. I play electronic music with a lot of mashups and edits, and Traktor gives me the control I need for that kind of set. Because my controller is also made by Native Instruments, everything works together out of the box. I do not spend time mapping buttons before a gig.
Traktor Pro 4 added a few things that changed how I prepare sets:
- Stem separation. Traktor can split a track into drums, bass, instruments and vocals, using iZotope technology. That means I can pull a vocal over another track live, without preparing an acapella first.
- Flexible beatgrids. Older tracks and live recordings often drift in tempo. Flexible beatgrids follow those changes, so loops and beat jumps stay on time.
- Pattern Player. A built in drum machine with classic drum sounds, useful for building intros and transitions.
- Ozone Maximizer. Raises loudness without clipping, which helps when tracks come in at different levels.
rekordbox: the one to know for club booths
rekordbox is the software from Pioneer DJ, and it is what most club booths are built around. You use it to prepare your music and export it to USB for Pioneer CDJ players, or to play directly from a laptop. I have played out on it, and I think every working DJ should know how to prepare a USB in rekordbox, even if they mix on something else at home.
It keeps moving fast. Version 7.2.16, released in July 2026, added more Spotify features, wireless DVS with Phase, and support for more players. Some features depend on which subscription plan you have, so check the plans before you commit.
Why I tell beginners to start with Traktor
When a new DJ asks me where to start, I say Traktor. It runs on both Windows and Mac, so it is a good choice if you are looking for DJ software for a PC. It pairs with Native Instruments controllers without extra setup, and the tools it gives you, like stems and flexible beatgrids, are the same ones you will use later as a working DJ. You learn once and keep growing on the same software.
Whatever you choose, learn to beatmatch by ear too. Sync is a great tool, but your ears are what save a set when something goes wrong.
My production setup
Logic Pro
Logic Pro is my DAW, where I write, arrange and mix my tracks. If you want to see how I work in it, watch my Logic Pro X EDM production episode 1 and episode 2, or read the written guide: how I produce EDM in Logic Pro.
Native Instruments plugins
Native Instruments instruments and effects are a big part of my sound, alongside Traktor on the DJ side.
VPS Avenger 2
Avenger 2 by Vengeance Sound is a synth I reach for when I want big, modern electronic sounds. It has an arpeggiator with ratchets, a drum loop module with time stretching, and a large factory library of presets, wavetables and loops.
Nexus 5
Nexus by reFX is known for ready to use sounds, and version 5, released in November 2024, turned it into a fuller synth. You can import your own samples and combine them with analog style oscillators, wavetables, granular and FM. It added 1,100 new presets for styles like EDM, house and melodic techno.
Other DJ software worth knowing
I do not play on these, but you will hear about them:
- Serato DJ Pro: popular with scratch and open format DJs, with strong support for turntables.
- VirtualDJ: common with mobile DJs, and it can mix video.
- djay Pro: by Algoriddim, works on phones, tablets and computers, with streaming built in.
- Engine DJ: the software behind Denon DJ standalone players.
